love lines

Which kinds of love, through which creative lines, require our urgent attention, rapture, reflection, reimagining, curiosity, laughter and compassion?

For three weeks in August, The Salons is returning to the Chrissie Cotter Gallery with love lines, a boutique program of art-after-hours experiences curated to respond to the theme of love.

Connecting artists and community to celebrate the magic and joy of the arts in daily life, our love lines program features a diverse ensemble of over 20 established, emerging and student artists working and playing in the worlds of poetry, music and the visual arts.

Through our bespoke program of free and ticketed events—including exhibition, performances, workshops and experiences—we invite you to forage amidst the varied perspectives, conversations, reflections and artistic expressions of love and its avatars.

The love lines visual arts group exhibition includes our interdisciplinary word artworks experiment, which features new works by artists collaborating across varied styles of creative writing and visual arts. The myriad of thematic interpretations includes ironic installations of self-care, cagy collaborations with past-selves, generational triptychs of familial sacrifice, empowering testimonies of eco-love through diverse rituals of trash transformation, archaic physiognomies, bodily adornments, ekphrastic reversals and confessions of nomadic wandering.

With free and ticketed events, our curated program also includes: opening and closing performance evenings; a poetry performance and artist panel with Gillian Swain and Magdalena Ball; an empathy-based poetry-of-art workshop with Erin Shiel; four-part harmony vocal workshops featuring songs of Bowie and Bush, with the ever-inspiring The Third Voice; and a creative play day of eco and sustainable arts practice, with Angie Contini, ieva Clive and Kerry Blake.

This year, The Salons introduces our word artwork experiment.

Writers were invited to submit new, unpublished words that speak to the theme of love lines. Artists were given the words to create visual artworks.

The result is an explosion of creativity, showing the ways in which art infiltrates and transforms an idea. We invite you to see, interpret and, in some cases, touch and play with these new works, which cover the gamut of love’s meanings.
